What is the difference between “Basis” and “Value”?

“Basis” is the amount of cash you paid (invested) for your stock. "Value" is based on the price per share of the most recent round of financing or the most recent valuation recorded. Given the nature of fast-moving start-ups, it may not represent the current or true value of your investment, particularly if you have not entered additional rounds of financing or a valuation recently.
